U.S. Dairy-based Anaerobic Digestion to Clean Energy Leader

Our Company

Vanguard Renewables Ag develops and operates Farm Powered manure-only anaerobic digestion facilities on U.S. dairy farms that improve manure and nutrient management, sequester methane to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and produce clean energy. Host farmers receive an income stream and can remain focused on farm operations while Vanguard Renewables Ag develops and operates the anaerobic digestion facilities. A typical Vanguard Renewables Ag dairy waste-to-energy project consists of a cluster of two to four farms and 20,000 to 30,000 dairy cows.

Award Winning Projects

Vanguard Renewables Ag is a subsidiary of Vanguard Renewables, the nation's leader in farm-based anaerobic digestion. The company was awarded the 2019 American Biogas Council Up-and-Coming Project of the Year for its Salisbury, VT Farm Powered anaerobic digestion project and the 2019 American Biogas Council Longevity Award for its Rutland, MA project, which has been in continuous operation since 2011. Vanguard’s Hadley, MA digester project won 2016 American Biogas Council Project of the Year honors.

Partnering to Help America’s Dairy Farmers Thrive

Vanguard Renewables Ag and Dominion Energy launched a more than $200 million strategic partnership in December 2019 to make the benefits of anaerobic digestion available to farms across America and deliver clean, renewable energy to millions of U.S. consumers. The partnership is the largest waste to energy program of its kind in the U.S. and will result in greenhouse gas emission reductions equivalent to taking 100,000 cars off America’s roads or planting 8 million new trees.

Through a strategic alliance with Dairy Farmers of American (DFA) Vanguard Renewables Ag brings the benefits of Farm Powered anaerobic digestion to more farms across America—reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing farmers with additional revenue. Projects are under development in Georgia, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah with additional projects planned nationwide. Vanguard Renewables Ag designs, develops, and operates the projects. Dominion Energy owns the projects and markets the renewable natural gas (RNG), offering it to Dominion Energy customers.

“For the first time, dairies across the country have partners with substantial financial resources and a deep understanding of the dairy industry working alongside them to take action now to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance long-term operational and economic sustainability. This strategic partnership with Dominion Energy and DFA will have a meaningful impact on greenhouse gas sequestration and dairy waste-to-energy production that will significantly benefit the farm community and the environment.”

How Farm Powered Anaerobic Digestion Works

®

The methane produced from dairy manure is captured through Farm Powered   anaerobic digestion and is then transported through low-pressure gathering lines to a central conditioning facility. The gas is processed and cleaned of any impurities and delivered to local consumers through the existing underground distribution network. It offers dairy farmers a manure management and greenhouse gas emissions solution by utilizing farm-based anaerobic digestion facilities that sequester the methane from dairy manure and process it into clean, renewable natural gas.
